Closed Systems: No Worries?
Don't be lulled into thinking your closed systems don't need regular attention because they're sealed tight. Only theoretically! Neglecting closed hot and chilled water loops may result in repairs or even replacement of components that have become corroded, coated or plugged with deposits, or contaminated with bacteria. Loss of heat transfer efficiency leading to increased energy costs, damage to surroundings from leaks, accelerated depletion of chemical treatments, and unscheduled shutdowns are other expensive repercussions of complacency.
Preventive maintenance on closed systems should include routine water testing for
- pH
- conductivity
- microorganisms (aerobic and anaerobic)
- sodium nitrite – ferrous inhibitor
- molybdenum – ferrous inhibitor
- borate – ferrous inhibitor and pH buffer
- azoles – yellow metal inhibitor
To tell whether a system has problems, dissolved oxygen, copper, iron, or dispersant polymer levels may be analyzed as well. If sulfite is added to scavenge oxygen, then the sulfite residual should be tested as well.
